Overview

The dormant Thrihnukagigur volcano is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula in south west Iceland. Just a 30 mins drive from Reykjavik, this huge volcanic magma chamber is now accessible to humans. (Minimum age 12 years)

The volcano is located on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Take a short hike across lava fields to the volcano (30-40 mins approximately), where you’ll receive a safety briefing, be kitted up in safety helmet and harness, before descending 120m/400ft through the top crater and down to the ground floor of the magma chamber. An open elevator system is used in the operation, transporting participants up and down the chamber in a cable lift. Thrihnukagigur volcano last erupted over 4,000 years ago.

Around 40-45 minutes is spent inside the volcano itself.

In the company of knowledgeable, specially trained guides throughout, also included is a taste of traditional Icelandic meat soup, and a selection of hot drinks.

Transfers are available from Reykjavik, or alternatively for those with their own vehicle, it is possible to meet in the car park close to the volcano. This is a fantastic way of exploring Iceland’s colourful and impressive geology, up close!
