Overview

No trip to Lapland is complete without taking part in some of the amazing winter activities available at Ranua Resort.

Take part in traditional Lappish pastimes such as husky sledding, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Or for those wanting to immerse themselves in Sami culture take a trip to meet a Sami family and their herd of Reindeer.  No trip would be complete without an excursion to attempt to witness the elusive Northern Lights.

Snowmobiling

Feeling adventurous? Discover the Finnish wilderness on an exciting snowmobile tour. You will receive full driving and safety instructions before a short lesson, once ready take to the trails through the forests and over frozen lakes.

Husky safari

A husky safari is a truly thrilling experience especially when you have the chance to be a musher in control of your own team of dogs.

Each excursion begins with a thorough driving instruction, after which you will be able to safely steer the husky sled yourself. One works as a the sled driver and the other enjoys the scenery while riding the sled through the snowy forest.

Northern lights

Chase the elusive aurora borealis on one of our stunning northern lights* tours. Experience nature’s best lightshow in a remote location far from light pollution. There are many ways in which to search for the Northern Lights while learning about science behind the phenomenon.

Reindeer experiences

Reindeers and reindeer herding is a big part of the history in Northern Finland. Learn about the life of a reindeer.

Snowshoeing

Snowshoes spread your weight over a wider area, letting you walk through deep snow without sinking too far.  Once used by the Sami, people used similar shoes for hunting trips, to help them get around in tricky terrain. On a guided snowshoe trip your guide will explain exactly how the snowshoes work and the best techniques before setting off through the snowy forest around Ranua.

Traditional Experiences

Traditional experiences offer a window into cultural heritage, connecting us to nature and timeless practices. Ice fishing in Finland allows participants to fish on frozen lakes, learning age-old techniques while enjoying serene, snowy landscapes. Similarly, traditional crafting teaches skills like leather and wood work, preserving history through hands-on creativity and shared stories.

Santa experiences

Meet and chat with Santa himself, a very special experience for children and adults alike.

Finn horse experience

Relax on a winter sleigh ride listening to the sound of the sleigh bells and the clatter of hooves, you can get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and stop to enjoy the moment.

Visit a Finnish family farm

Visit a Finnish family farm, learn about the life of the farm in arctic conditions  and meet the typical Lappish farm animals, such as Finn horses, Northern Finn cattle, Finnish Lapphund, sheep, chicken, cats and rabbits.

Ranua Wildlife Park

Ranua Wildlife Park is home to Finland’s only polar bear and 50 other arctic and northern animal species, a total of about 150 individual animals. The animals’ spacious enclosures are located in the middle of the northern coniferous forest, which is also the natural environment for most of the species living in the park.

Snow and ice fun

Try some traditional Finnish winter activities, from Ice Swimming to Ice skating there is something for everyone.

National park visit

Visit Korouma national park, a 30km long, 130 metre deep canyon valley with high cliffs and frozen waterfalls offering fantastic views in winter.
