Sura Indigenous Chocolate Tour, Sarapiqui

2 hours

Year Round

Overview

It’s thought that the Olmec civilisation were the first to transform the humble cacao plant into chocolate, nearly 4000 years ago.

Chocolate achieved a revered status and was a fundamental part of religious and royal ceremonies for Olmec, Mayan and Aztec alike. During your tour you’ll learn of the significance of chocolate to Costa Rica’s indigenous people, and how it’s been used as both medicine and currency. You’ll also find out how cacao is turned into the chocolate we know and love today, witnessing the process from bean to bar before enjoying a taste of the end result.

All the gear, all the ideas. During the Green Season, the heady combo of humidity and rain demand a hard suitcase, dry bag, waterproofs and hiking shoes.
