An incredible stretch of land that encompasses towering mountains, sparkling lakes and icy glaciers, a journey over the South Island by flight is a marvellous way to witness many of the area’s incredible highlights.
Traversing the magnificent Southern Alps, whose jagged white-capped peaks include the jutting 3,754 metre Mt Cook, the highest mountain in Oceania, this journey provides a unique perspective on this rich and rising landscape.
Heading towards the ice fields of the West Coast including the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers, whose majestic fields of white stretch out towards the horizon in an elegant and frozen river, you may also pass over the sparkling Tasman and Murchison glaciers. The blinding white, offset by the rich indigo of the nearby ocean, is striking. The flight departs from either Franz Josef Glacier or from Lake Tekapo, where the weather is generally more reliable. Please note that all flights are weather dependent.
