Providing a dramatic backdrop for a boat excursion, Western Brook Pond is a glacier-carved, inland freshwater fjord surrounded by sheer cliffs and cascading waterfalls. The ‘pond’ is 16kms long, 165 metres deep and is home to Atlantic salmon, brook trout, and arctic char, as well as an unusual colony of cliff nesting gulls. During your cruise keep your eyes peeled for wildlife and learn more about Gros Morne’s unique landscapes and history.
Please allow plenty of time to reach Western Brook, the car park is located 27kms north of Rocky Harbour. From the parking lot there is a 40-60 minute walk (3kms or roughly 2 miles) leading to the dock. The trail carries you over the fragile coastal plain, which was once located below sea level. Along the way, you can examine the variety of plant life, look for wildlife or read the interpretive panels dotted throughout the trail. Located at the dock, you will find a sheltered waiting area, indoor washroom facilities, canteen services, gift shop, and a picnic area.
I understand that one size doesn’t fit all, and that’s why you have the freedom to design your experience, your way.
