Zealandia Ecosanctuary, Wellington

From £44

3.5 hours

Year Round

Overview

Described by Lonely Planet as a ‘life-changing experience’ in the recently published Best In Travel Guide 2011, few visitors to Wellington should miss an excursion to Zealandia.

Less than ten minutes from downtown Wellington, Zealandia is the world’s first urban wildlife eco-sanctuary. Featuring 225 hectares of wilderness, the sanctuary is home to some of New Zealand’s rarest and most endangered wildlife. Including the hihi, a beautiful black, white and golden bird who is around the size of a sparrow, the little spotted kiwi, who has become such an icon of New Zealand, as well as the charismatic kaka, this is a must-stop for many birdwatchers exploring New Zealand. Lizards also make their home here, such as the tuatara, a pre-historic reptile that still thrives here.

We strongly recommend a 2-hour night safari to experience New Zealand’s native bush by torch light as it comes alive with birdsong. Observe the country’s most treasured residents heading out into the darkness and enjoy one of nature’s finest moments.

Duration: at leisure
Price: from £44 per person (night safari)

team-in-location-liz-canada Definite bucket-list material. The mountain landscapes around Queenstown are off the scale when it comes to vast, rugged nature, so take our advice and experience them by helicopter. You'll whizz over valleys, peaks, lakes and rivers before landing on a remote glacier. Unreal.
