Get footloose and fancy-free in a majestic landscape of volcanoes, lava fields, glaciers, hot springs, hidden fjords and black-sand beaches. Iceland is a breathtaking destination for both serious hikers and casual walkers. Our collection of walking and hiking itineraries is suited to all abilities and ranges from multi-day guided treks staying under canvas to self-drive tours linking scenic walking trails throughout the country. You can choose to have hiking as the focus of your holiday or opt for an itinerary that features an occasional day out on the trails.

Walking and hiking group tours

Join like-minded travellers and hike world-class trails (like the Laugavegur) in the company of an expert guide on one of our small-group hiking holidays. They’re an excellent way to explore off-the-beaten-track on paths you might not discover travelling independently. You will also gain a deep insight into local culture and geology, not to mention a healthy dose of Icelandic folklore.

Self drives for hikers

If you prefer to explore independently, a self drive is the perfect way to combine multiple trails, experiencing a variety of terrains and locations. Pick and itinerary and you’ll find places to hike or stroll, though our Fly, Drive and Hike is geared to walkers. You could spend one day roaming a wild and beautiful shore, then set out on a mountain hike the next. And long summer days means you can stride out well into the evening. You might prefer lots of short walks. Iceland’s wide open spaces are bursting with waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes and many are easily accessible.

Iconic trails

Snaking through a spectacular region of the Icelandic Highlands, the 55km-long Laugavegur trail is one of the world’s greatest hiking routes. It takes you on an unforgettable journey from the geothermal hot springs of Landmannalaugar to the verdant glacial valley of Thorsmork, passing colourful mountain slopes, glaciers, lakes and rivers along the way.

In East Iceland, Borgarfjordur Eystri is riddled with superb hiking trails, including the surreal, boulder-strewn mountain valley of Storurd and the deserted coastal inlet of Brunavik. Also in the East, the nature reserve at Skalanes and idyllic Seydisfjordur offer great walking opportunities. In West Iceland, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is also rich in hiking potential. Stride out along the cliffs between Arnarstapi and Hellnar for rock arches, blowholes and seabirds, or set your sights on the snowy slopes of the dormant volcano Snaefellsjokull.

Whether you wish to explore independently or in a small escorted group, we can help find your ideal walking and hiking holiday. It’s time to lace up those boots – this country was made for walking.
