Overview

The long, rugged coastline of Norway, with its dramatic seascapes and rich maritime heritage, is best explored on a cruise holiday. The local Hurtigruten ships ply the coast year round, calling at ports between Bergen and Kirkenes a route also frequented by Havila’s new eco-friendly ships.

The coastal route threads through a maze of deep fjords and scattered islands, past towering mountains and colourful fishing villages. At North Cape, the northernmost part of continental Europe, stand on the 307 metre-high cliff and take in the breathtaking views out to the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean.

Beyond the famed coastal route, Norway’s Arctic archipelago, Svalbard, offers a different type of cruise holiday. A naturalist’s paradise, this remote island group is the kingdom of the polar bear and is best explored during summer on an expedition cruise.

I understand that one size doesn’t fit all, and that’s why you have the freedom to design your experience, your way.

Ships vary in age and size and some of the older vessels, although smaller, have a very special character while the newer ship boast large panoramic lounges, hot tubs on the sun deck and a selection of cafes and bars.

Voyages during the winter months are very popular due to potential sightings of the northern lights. Between September and early April with the vast, dark skies you have a good chance of seeing them awash with the aurora borealis. On the other hand, during the summer months, the Nordic sun barely sets above the Arctic Circle bathing the dramatic coastline in the golden rays of the beautiful midnight sun.

Expedition cruises around Svalbard

Away from mainland Norway, the High Arctic archipelago of Svalbard is a dream destination for nature lovers. An expedition cruise here around the pristine Svalbard coastline offers the chance to encounter whales, walrus, reindeer, seabirds by the thousands, and that most iconic of Arctic residents, the polar bear. Breathe in the fresh, crisp air and take in majestic glaciers, sculpted icebergs and sweeping tundra in the perpetual daylight of an Arctic summer.
