This short break takes you to the world’s northernmost town, Longyearbyen, during the light winter season into spring as the days draw longer. Stay in comfortable accommodation in this remote wilderness location and enjoy a range of exciting excursions as well as opportunities to see the elusive northern lights.
This short break offers a taste of life in Svalbard. During the light winter season (mid-February to mid-May), which follows the polar night, daylight returns to the High Arctic as well as chances to explore the great Svalbard outdoors taking part in a range of wilderness adventures. The early part of this period still provides opportunities to witness the magical aurora, but as the days extend through April, the midnight sun shines perpetual light on the still snowy landscape making it a wonderful time to visit!
Longyearbyen
The town of Longyearbyen is the base for this trip. It has a rustic charm, unique atmosphere and international feel with people from many different nationalities residing and working here. The town’s attractions are worth a visit too, such as the Svalbard Museum or Wild Photo Gallery. There are several quality restaurants and bars to choose from. For a remote place, it’s surprising just how much choice is available and you may be surprised that two of Norway’s leading restaurants are located here – Huset and Funktionaermessen.
Itinerary
On arrival in Longyearbyen transfer on the airport coach service (payable locally) to the city centre and your accommodation. The remainder of the day is free to explore the town.
Enjoy time to explore independently or head out on your choice of guided experiences. Around Longyearbyen itself you can take a town tour with a local, delve into Mine Number 3 or even enjoy a beer or champagne tasting tour! Further afield the options are endless… A thrilling way to travel is by snowmobile, ranging from shorter trips to full day excursions, perhaps visiting abandoned settlements or travelling in search of the king of the Arctic, the polar bear.
Alternatively try dog-sledding, letting the eager huskies whisk you off into the wilderness. This is a great way to experience Svalbard’s natural landscapes, with friendly dogs gliding along the trails as a more traditional means of transport. You can also travel by Snowcat, sitting back and enjoying the scenery while your guide shares stories about Svalbard and its wildlife.
