Year Round

Overview

Hurtigruten is the name of the world-famous shipping route between Bergen and Kirkenes and has been described as the ‘world’s most beautiful sea voyage’. The Hurtigruten ships trace the dramatic Norwegian coastline from Bergen and the southern fjords, up across the Arctic Circle, all the way to Lofoten and the top end of Europe to Kirkenes, before heading south back to Bergen on a spectacular 12 day round trip. Operating all year the voyage provides different experiences, with ample opportunities for spotting the spectacular northern lights in the winter season.

These coastal voyages operate year round. In the autumn and winter, as well as offering a variety of onshore excursions and sights during the day, the northern lights prove a big attraction – huge sweeping vistas provide the canvas for often spectacular displays of the aurora, while the ‘alert system’ ensures you don’t miss out if they appear in the small hours.

Hurtigruten ships are working vessels which call in at different ports throughout the day and night, transporting goods and passengers. More than just a means of travel for the locals between remote ports, this route and the ships that sail up and down it year round, have become a popular way for visitors to explore the region. One of the draws of travelling this route is that you are always in eye shot of the remarkable scenery of coastal Norway.

The voyage takes you from Bergen to Kirkenes and back again in 12 days , calling at 34 ports and covering over 2,500 nautical miles, which allows you to explore every inch of the coastal magic Norway has to offer. Any time of year, this voyage is like no other!

The drama of the scenery and wildlife is simply breathtaking. Twenty two of the ports lie north of the Arctic Circle – and you have the opportunity to join optional excursions. Whatever you may miss on the northbound sailing during the night, you are able to see in daylight on the southbound sailing.
