This small group holiday combines a variety of guided hikes by day with comfortable hotel accommodation by night, offering the perfect way to explore the spectacular alpine landscapes of Canada’s Rocky Mountains. Exploring on foot allows the chance to escape the main tourist trails and appreciate the wild beauty and remote wilderness on offer throughout the Rockies.
From the well-known resort towns of Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper you will hike through the heart of the Rockies, taking in vivid lakes, vast glaciers, alpine meadows and soaring mountains.
You may be lucky enough to spot elk, bears, and big horn sheep as you walk, whilst enjoying the company of like-minded travellers and a knowledgeable and informative guide.
Your guide will lead you on carefully selected day hikes, ranging from short lakeside strolls to more demanding mountain hikes. All trails are optional and your guide will explain the route and level of difficulty in advance, as well as adapting the selected walks on offer to suit the group and the local conditions.
This hotel-based holiday allows the freedom to hike with only a light day-pack, returning each evening to a comfortable bed so you can awake refreshed and ready for the next day’s adventure.
Itinerary
On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Meet your guide for a pre tour briefing this evening.
After breakfast board the bus for the drive to Banff National Park. This afternoon you will stretch your legs on the first hike of the trip, along the shores of Lake Minnewanka or on one of the many mountain trails near Banff. Return to Banff for a 2-night stay.
Hiking time 2-3 hours .
A full day hike is included today – explore mountain passes, remote lakes and alpine meadows high above the tree line. This evening enjoy some time at leisure to pick up some souvenirs or relax in one of Banff’s many restaurants.
Hiking time 5-7 hours.
In the picture postcard setting of Lake Louise, less than an hour’s drive from Banff, your guide will suggest a 3.5km path with 400m elevation gain to an historic tea house overlooking an alpine lake. Perched on the edge of Lake Agnes, this tea house was built in 1901 and continues to welcome hikers today. Here a network of easy to demanding trails tempt you to go further and higher. You may wish to tackle a 15km circuit into the Plain of Six Glaciers or a 2.5km climb to a summit for exceptional views of nearby peaks and distant landscapes.
Hiking time 3-5 hours.
Today you may wish to take an optional white water rafting trip on the Kicking Horse River from Golden, BC (additional cost). Alternatively you can continue to explore on foot, with an 18kms circuit through two flower-filled passes at 1830m and 2180m – rewarded by spectacular views of Emerald Lake. The Natural Bridge, Takakkaw Falls, and Spiral Tunnel are other attractions of Yoho National Park.
Hiking time 6 hours.
A journey along the renowned Icefields Parkway includes frequent stops for short excursions as you travel through the heart of the Rockies. Marvel at the vivid colours of Peyto Lake and the vast Columbia Icefields, from where glacier-fed rivers eventually reach three different oceans. Saskatchewan Glacier is best viewed from above after hiking 2.5kms to a windy ridge at 2260m. At the end of the day check in to your Jasper hotel for the next 2 nights.
Hiking time 2 hours.
Jasper offers a wealth of activities – swimming and a picnic at Pyramid Lake, mountain biking, horse back riding, canoeing and more. Or join your guide for a trip to Maligne Lake and an 8kms loop hike, rising into the hills to a 2790m peak overlooking the water.
Hiking time 2-6 hours.
On your way back to Calgary there may be time to visit Athabasca Falls as well as the opportunity for a final hike. Your farewell to the Rockies is an 8 kms hike into a pass near the spectacular Columbia Icefields. Continue to Calgary, arriving in the city around 7pm.
Hiking time 2-3 hours.
Bid farewell to your fellow-hikers as your holiday ends with a transfer to the airport.
