Reykjavik is a place of many facets: the charming timber buildings of its historic heart are clustered around the city’s centrepiece – a lake and bird sanctuary. In the bustling streets surrounding the cathedral and Parliament, you’ll find a plethora of cafés and other eating establishments. Reykjavik has more than its fair share of top class restaurants with many internationally-known chefs preparing a vast range of cuisine to the highest standards. And a trip to Iceland wouldn’t be complete without trying Pylsur – the very tasty Icelandic hot dog!
This modern and slightly quirky city is home to some fascinating examples of contemporary architecture – three must-see sites are its church Hallgrimskirkja, a skyline sentinel whose profile draws from the landscape’s basalt columns, Perlan with its shimmering glass dome and the waterside Harpa Concert Hall, inspired by nature.
Where architecture leaves off, art takes over. Reykjavik’s galleries and an unusual array of museums are complemented by a lively theatre and concert scene. The city’s varied nightlife is legendary and at the weekends the 120 or so bars and clubs generally fill up around midnight, with the fun-loving inhabitants having fun through until breakfast time.
And of course no trip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the world famous Blue Lagoon which can be added to your itinerary either on the way into the city or on your return journey to the international airport.
