Senja is located south-west of Tromso, high above the Arctic Circle and is the second largest island in Norway. Home to some amazing landscapes, it provides a ideal setting for adventure and northern lights viewings.
Your adventure starts and ends with nights in Tromso, a city steeped in history and offering many attractions such as the Polar Museum, as well as excellent shops, restaurants and cafes.
On your second day journey by express boat to Finnsnes and transfer to Hamn i Senja your base for the next 4 nights. Enjoy delicious meals, excursions including a wildlife safari by boat and northern lights snowshoe walk, and soak in the hot tub with stunning fjord views. Visit the cosy lighthouse in the evening and keep watch for the elusive aurora.
The return journey takes you from Finnsnes to Tromso by Hurtigruten or Havila coastal voyage, a great way to relax and enjoy the scenic coast before arriving in Tromso for the last night.
Itinerary
On arrival in Tromso make your way by the regular airport coach to the city centre hotel (payable locally). Enjoy some time in the city with excellent restaurants and bars to choose from before staying overnight in Tromso.
Spend the morning at leisure to visit Tromso’s many attractions such as the Arctic Cathedral; Polaria Arctic aquarium; Polar Museum; cable car to Fjellstua for spectacular views; Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum and even its own brewery. In the afternoon take the express ferry which takes 1 hour 20 minutes o Finnsnes. You will be met and transferred to Hamn i Senja in time for dinner.
Hamn i Senja, Senja
This morning depart on a boat trip in the scenic archipelago of the fjord where steep, majestic mountain dive straight into the sea. Just outside Hamn we pass a cormorant colony and often glimpse sea eagles. The knowledgeable guides will tell you about the wildlife and stories about the life in this area. Return to the hotel for lunch, This afternoon relax in the sauna and outdoor hot tub with a 360 degree panoramic view towards the idyllic Bergsfjord and surrounding mountains. After dinner (2 course) return to the Lighthouse, keep watch for the aurora and enjoy a hot drink.
After breakfast take a dip in the Atlantic ocean, with specially designed floating suits, you’ll stay comfortable no matter the weather. Relax and let yourself float effortlessly in the water, feeling like a part of the ocean. This afternoon enjoy afternoon tea with traditional Norwegian waffle cakes and hot drinks. After dinner tonight embark on a guided snowshoe tour in search of the northern lights.
Today depart on a sightseeing trip along the Senja national scenic route, see the tiny fishing village of Gryllefjord, sheltered fjords, narrow winding roads and dramatic landscapes.
The afternoon is free to relax in the surroundings of the hotel or choose an extra excursion, such as beer tasting at Senja Brewery. After dinner (2 course) return to the Lighthouse, keep watch for the aurora and enjoy a hot drink.
After breakfast, transfer back to Finnsnes to connect with the Hurtigruten or Havila coastal boat departing at 11.30am. Arrive in Tromso at approximately 14.15 and check-in to your hotel for an overnight stay before spending the rest of the day at leisure exploring the city.
Explore the city at leisure or if time permits perhaps enjoy an optional excursion before making your way to the airport (payable locally) for your flight home.
