Stockholm
Stretched across an archipelago of 14 islands connected by a network of waterways and bridges, Stockholm is a delightful mix of traditional and contemporary and the city centre can easily be explored on foot.
During the festive season, the addition of thousands of tiny streetlights, enticing shop windows and excellent Christmas markets, make this trip an even more attractive prospect.
Icehotel
What better way to celebrate the festive season than to spend it somewhere that boasts a spectacular Icehotel and perfect Christmas-card scenery. As if a holiday at the Icehotel isn’t special enough, at Christmas it takes on a whole new ambience, lit with twinkling lights and decorated trees, as festive aromas punctuate your senses, warming Glögg full of Christmas spices and that consummate favourite, traditional gingerbread – available throughout the day . You’ll have no problem getting into the festive spirit and we don’t just mean by visiting the Icebar!
With a wide range of exciting winter activities on offer, there are plenty of options for exploring the snow covered wilderness areas surrounding the quaint Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi.
And don’t forget to keep a look out for the northern lights. Surely the perfect way to spend the most wonderful time of the year!
Itinerary
On arrival in Stockholm make your own way to your city centre hotel. Depending on your flight time, why not visit to the fascinating old town of Stockholm – Gamla Stan, which takes you back to the 13th century. You cannot help but feel its medieval atmosphere as you wander through its cobblestone streets past narrow, colourful houses of yesteryear. At Christmas time the Gamla Stan Christmas market sets up its stands and you can sample a whole range of traditional Swedish delicacies including Christmas sweets, smoked sausages, reindeer and moose meat, spicy mulled wine (glögg) and a range of high-quality handicrafts.
Why not soak the Christmas atmosphere by making a visit to Stockholm’s open air museum, Skansen, famous for its Nordic Zoo and living history exhibition; about 150 historical buildings have been moved here from all over Sweden. Skansen also puts on a respected traditional Christmas market where you can wander the cosy streets and admire the Christmas foods and handicrafts on offer.
Fly from Stockholm to Kiruna and transfer to Jukkasjarvi. Check in at the Icehotel for 3 nights (one in a standard Ice Room) and get kitted out in your thermal clothing, on loan for the duration of your stay. Then enjoy your time in the wonderful surroundings.
Speak to our Icehotel specialists should you wish to upgrade to an Art Suite or Deluxe Suite for your night in the Icehotel.
Icehotel Accommodation
Enjoy a buffet breakfast in the Icehotel restaurant then the day is free to explore your scenic surrounds or one of the many available optional excursions. There are also a number of other activities in and around the Icehotel to help fill your day.
Be as active or relaxed as you wish today as you spend Christmas in an Arctic winter wonderland! Don’t forget it’s advisable to book optional excursions and your Christmas meal in advance.
After breakfast enjoy a morning at leisure to take a few more treasured photos or perhaps try out ice sculpting. Transfer to the airport at Kiruna for your flight home.
