Edifier’s QR65 Active Monitor Speakers are undoubtedly some of the best you can find for high-quality sound, packing a great punch within its element of bass production. While other sound systems do the same, they may suffer from distortion, hampering audio clarity, but this isn’t the case here.

Whether you’re planning on diving into gaming or viewing your favorite TV shows and movies, these speakers will ensure you’re getting the best out of the experience. Whilst there are regions here that need work in the aspect of software and controlling the equalizer on other platforms, this is one to draw your attention to.

What We Think

The Edifier QR65 Active Monitor Speakers do an excellent job at providing fantastic audio clarity and bass simultaneously, without any major distortion. The brand has done a stellar job at ensuring these speakers help contribute towards your immersion, regardless of your chosen activity in gaming or casual movie and TV show viewing.

It could be a lot better with access to a Windows PC application of Edifier ConneX, so users don’t have to connect to Bluetooth to access its EQ. Regardless, this doesn’t take away from the quality present here, and are a set of speakers that you should be out to attain as soon as possible.

  • Fantastic clarity and bass even at high volumes

Reasons to Avoid
  • No EQ or Edifier ConneX app for Windows PC
  • EQ can only be controlled through app when connected via Bluetooth

Price

For just $369.99/£329, the Edifier’s speakers provide enough features to justify the price. There are two models to choose from, a black model as seen above, and a white model both at the same price. The choice comes down to a cosmetic preference rather than hardware, both coming with the same set of features ready to adhere to a plethora of uses.

The price may seem like a huge jump from the likes of Edifier’s R1280Ts Studio Speakers, but connectivity, output power, and other aesthetics stand as major reasons why.

You’ll find it available on Amazon’s UK store and Edifier’s US site with payment options ready to be utilized if necessary.

Performance

Sound

As aforementioned, the Edifier QR65 Active Monitor Speakers excel at providing fantastic bass without distortion and poor audio clarity. This is thanks to the 1.25″ silk diaphragm tweeters, which are designed to ensure the trebles are high enough to deliver crystal-clear sound.

Setting these speakers to the maximum volume on both the main speaker itself and via Windows on PC provided exceptional immersion while streaming movies or gaming. You might normally anticipate a louder volume with a great bass level to ruin clarity levels, but that isn’t the case here.

Its design may suggest that it maintains sound that just about manages to produce a good level of bass, but you’ll be surprised to hear just how punchy they can get. They take advantage of 2.75″ mid-low drivers, ensuring bass is still great while at a frequency of 55Hz.

During our testing, we found that using the QR65 speakers without adjusting its equalizer within its Bluetooth mode or using the Dolby Atmos software, bass can be quite lacking. While this doesn’t support the Dolby Atmos For Home Theater on PC, using the mode designed for headphones amplifies sound drastically.

Gaming in action-packed titles stood as a much better experience with these speakers – the increased clarity levels compared to Edifier’s Studio Speakers are worth noting. If you’re a competitive gamer who relies on listening out for every sound around you in-game, using Dolby Atmos on the QR65 is ideal.

While not designed for these speakers, the access to an equalizer makes this worth checking out, as seen above. This can be used alongside the equalizer present within the Edifier ConneX application, to find the sound that’s right for you.

Edifier ConneX Application – Home screen and Equalizer

To do this, you’ll need to connect your phone to the QR65 main speaker and change the input source once you’ve adjusted the EQ.

EQ/Audio Control

Speaking of the sound equalizer, it is slightly disappointing to see the bass and treble controls on the main speaker missing. This wouldn’t be too much of an issue if Edifier made an app for Windows PC users. Access to the EQ on PC will alleviate the need to connect to Bluetooth again whenever you wish to adjust sound settings, but that is more of a nitpick in this case.

When connected via Bluetooth, you’ll have access to HD Audio Codec which can be activated via the cog wheel in the top right corner. This will allow you to stream audio up to 24bit/96kHz, ensuring your audio enjoyment is still great away from using the LINE IN and USB-A high-res audio.

Connectivity

Input Sources

With the Edifier ConneX application in mind, the QR65 Speakers feature Bluetooth, LINE in, and USB-A connectivity as input sources. If you’re coming from using the R1280DBs, this is an essential upgrade, providing USB-A as another option to rely on.

If the amount of bass produced here isn’t satisfying, then you can utilize a subwoofer, thanks to the Sub Out port present.

Extra Features

Perhaps the biggest surprise here is the presence of the TurboGaN charging ports, with two USB-C ports and one USB-A port. These come with a total of 65W when using USB-C and 60W when using USB-A.

Edifier QR65 – Ports/Connectivity

While not entirely necessary for a set of speakers or even expected, it is highly beneficial here, to keep your devices charged while immersed. It helps that it is compatible with many devices, with claims of over 1000+ compatible devices, and with our testing, it appears to be a reliable option.

Design/Aesthetic

Aesthetic

Moving away from the great sound quality, the QR65 Speakers maintain a feature that RGB enthusiasts will be raving about. It utilizes a range of lighting effects, which can either be controlled on the side of the main speaker or done via the Edifier ConneX app.

Many of the modes present feature different lighting patterns including one which syncs with the audio regardless of your chosen content. This in particular isn’t the best in terms of accuracy, but it still does enough to keep you satisfied in this region.

Build Quality

Edifier has done a great job at building sturdy speakers, with a leather build on the outside protecting the powerful diaphragm tweeters. Ensuring you get the best out of each speaker, you’ll have two stands at your disposal, pushing the speaker up at a 10-degree angle.

This is ideal for desktop setups, giving you multiple ways to adjust your speakers and their positioning.

Conclusion

Overall, the Edifier QR65 Active Monitor Speakers are highly recommended. They will not only provide incredible sound for your movies and games with their silk dome tweeters, but they adhere to any potential RGB gaming PC setup. Issues in the aspect of there being no Windows application that is equivalent to the Edifier ConneX on Android and iOS are evident, but using Dolby Atmos can help with this.
