Overview

This semi-escorted tour takes you on a spellbinding journey through the magical Norwegian fjords visiting some of the most scenic and well-known places including Bergen, Sognefjord and Flam. Spectacular mountains, waterfalls and fjords provide the backdrop for rail journeys, cruises and cultural tours. Let your guide take you from one enchanting location to the next, finishing in the capitals  Oslo, Norway’s lively capital and Stockholm, the “Venice of the North”.

Travelling independently between the different locations is as much a highlight as each destination itself with natural beauty at every turn. Start with a sightseeing tour of Bergen, the gateway to the fjords and a UNESCO World Heritage City. Continue by boat along the Sognefjord, the longest and deepest in Norway making your way to the village Balestrand where you have time to relax amidst stunning scenery.

The final leg of the tour is by trains and features the famous Flamsbana railway. The 20-kilometre winding track is considered to be one of the most scenic rail journeys in the world, taking you through picturesque landscapes to the mountain village of Myrdal. Change trains and continue onward to Oslo with plenty of time to explore the Norwegian capital city.

Group size: typically between 35 and 45 participants.

Itinerary

On arrival in Bergen, make your way to your hotel (payable locally) for an overnight stay. There are regular buses and trains that run from the airport to the city. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Explore the city’s most iconic landmarks on an included walking tour of Hanseatic Bryggen, St. Mary’s Church, Håkon’s Hall, and the renowned fish market. You can also opt for an excursion on the Fløibanen Funicular, which takes you to the top of Mount Fløyen for a panoramic view of the city and a Bergen food tour, or a 3 hour fjord cruise to Mostrumen. Both at an additional cost.

Travel by boat to Balestrand with your group. Cruise along Sognefjord – the King of the fjords and the longest and deepest in Norway. The cruise continues to the village Balestrand where on arrival you walk to your hotel. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure. Dinner and two nights stay here.

The day is free for you to relax and enjoy the fjord surroundings. There are several hikes in the area you can take from the village or it is also possible to join an optional half day excursion to Fjaerland (needs to be pre-booked before you travel and is at an additional cost). On this trip take a scenic journey to the small village of Fjaerland passing tiny villages and waterfalls to where the fjord meets the glacier.

Your journey on the Sognefjord continues today. The initial part of the fjord, called Aurlandsfjord, is a 17-kilometer arm of the world’s second longest fjord, the Sognefjord (204 km). It is considered to be one of the most picturesque fjords in the world. Arrive in Flåm, where you will have a short time to discover the small village and take a drinks break in one of the cafes before boarding the famous Flåmsbana to Myrdal – a mountain railway station and junction located about 13km from the village Flam. Flåmsbana, one of the steepest and most scenic railway journeys in the world. The line runs through fantastic nature and scenery with steep mountains, waterfalls and through 20 tunnels as it winds its way to Myrdal where you will change trains for the last part of your journey to Oslo. On arrival make your own way to your hotel.

After breakfast meet your local guide for a 3-hour sightseeing tour of Norway’s vibrant capital city. The tour includes a visit to Frogner Park with Vigeland sculptures; the Royal Palace; City Hall and Akershus Fortress, a medieval castle showing the history of Oslo.
The rest of the day is at leisure for you to continue visiting the sights or relax in one of the delightful cafes taking in the city atmosphere.

Your tour leader will escort you to the train station, where you’ll say your goodbyes before continuing your journey to Sweden. Take the high-speed train to Stockholm, and upon arrival, proceed to your hotel on your own. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the city at your leisure. Maybe stroll around the narrow cobbled streets of Gamla Stan, the old town with one of the best preserved medieval city centres; visit the Royal Palace or Stockholm Cathedral; and enjoy a wealth of shopping and sightseeing opportunities.

Your taxi driver will meet you at reception and take you to the port where you’ll embark on the Royal Canal Cruise. During the cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about this fascinating city and its rich history. Often called the “Beauty on Water” or the “Venice of the North,” Stockholm is built on 14 islands and is surrounded by both Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea. The city’s impressive public buildings, palaces and numerous museums beautifully showcase its 700-year-old history. After the Royal Canal Cruise, enjoy the rest of your time exploring the city at your leisure, then make your way back to your hotel.

Time to explore the city further before making your own way to the airport for your flight home.
