Greg Mortimer

Overview

Launched in 2019, the Greg Mortimer is a custom-built expedition ship featuring cutting-edge design, superior comfort and environmentally friendly technology.

Maximum passengers: 130

Named for an Australian mountaineer, the Greg Mortimer is a modern, purpose-built vessel designed specifically for expedition cruising. As such every detail has been carefully thought through to enhance your overall experience, providing an unrivalled level of comfort, safety and efficiency on board.

The Greg Mortimer’s most striking feature is the X-BOW®, an inverted bow concept which results in smoother sailing and increased efficiency. Rather than rising over and then dropping onto waves like a traditional ship, the X-BOW® pierces through them, splitting the wave’s energy. This has multiple benefits – it enables the ship to remain much more stable in rough seas, it makes the ship faster and more energy efficient, with fewer emissions and lower fuel consumption, and the decks are kept drier with less ocean spray.

If you travel across the infamous Drake Passage, take some ginger tea or ginger biscuits with you to banish nausea. It can also help to lay in a place where you can see the horizon and get air often.

Cabins & suites

Guest cabins offer exceptional comfort and many feature full length window or private balconies, ideal for keeping an eye out for passing wildlife.

Single travellers
Twin share cabins are available (on a same gender basis). Sole occupancy of a cabin incurs a supplement.

Environmentally Friendly

The X-BOW® also features state-of-the-art virtual anchoring technology, in which GPS and high-tech steering are used to hold position rather than using a traditional anchor. This means that the delicate sea floor remains undisturbed and undamaged. Reduced emissions into the air and sea, lower energy consumption, high fuel efficiency, reduced light pollution to minimise wildlife disruption and lower on-board plastic use are all in place to reduce the Greg Mortimer’s impact on the environment too. The ship is also operated by a certified B Corporation, who have made a legal commitment to balance purpose and profit.  They must meet high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.

A new Standard

With creature comforts and high quality facilities like the Wellness Centre (featuring gym equipment, sauna and spa with massage therapist), a well-stocked library, a lecture theatre, restaurant and multimedia room, the Greg Mortimer sets a new standard for modern expedition vessels. There are also two lounge/bars with floor to ceiling windows, and plenty of outside deck space.

Other innovative features of the ship include two unique hydraulic observation platforms, which fold out for unobstructed views. There are four sea-level Zodiac launching platforms, designed for speedy embarkation to help maximise time ashore. And a separate activity launch platform has been carefully designed to provide plenty of space for kayakers, divers, skiers and climbers to prepare equipment and make their way off the ship.

Citizen Science

Get involved and give back by participating in various Citizen Science projects, both on and off the vessel.

Make a difference by helping the scientific community through participating in data collection and analysis. Take the opportunity to join ongoing investigations and public participation activities devoted to scientific research in remote places like Antarctica.

You can engage in a number of unique projects, from surveying seabirds and studying phytoplankton, to tracking whales and mapping weather patterns.

The projects are informative, interactive, and fun! There are multiple chances to actively collaborate and your on-board Citizen Science coordinator will be on hand to introduce and assist you with the projects being conducted on your voyage.
